Don't Let The Past Define Your Future

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 ESV

Paul, a great missionary, authored this verse and several other letters in the New Testament. Before he was transformed by God to begin his ministry, he was known as Saul, a relentless persecutor of Christians. So if anyone had good reason to let go of their past, it was Paul. After his conversion and in spite of difficult circumstances, Paul led others to Christ by example; he pressed on with steadfast determination to glorify God.

Plenty of us spend a great deal of time living in or thinking about the past; the good and the bad. We’ve all been around people who tirelessly reminisce about their greatness in sports or their savvy in closing that big deal. In contrast, there are also individuals who appear stuck in the aftermath of suffering or sorrow, incapable of moving beyond sadness and thereby reliving their pain. No matter what your past successes or failures may be, we are all called to move forward toward a singular goal; the goal of pressing on to secure the ultimate prize of eternal salvation.

I came across this anonymous quote: “The first step toward getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.” The simplicity of that statement speaks volumes. It often takes courageous humility to change directions in life. But following Paul’s lead, we can choose to step out of our past and into God’s grace.

Don’t get stuck by letting your past define the future. Acknowledge the truth of Christ and experience His goodness resonating in your life!

Your past has nothing to do with your present and your present cannot determine your future. Press on. it is well!
